. >> did mitt romney's post debate victory hit a speed bump with the unemployment rate? we'll break down what the numbers mean. this is special report. good evening, i'm bret baier. president obama is hailing the jobs report, showing a drop from 8.1% to 7.8, as a sign the country has come too far to turn back now. his republican challenger says the new numbers are not the sign of a true recovery, in fact, he says they're telling a far different story. the government's household survey says that 873,000 people entered the work force. but the employer survey found 114,000 new jobs created, 10,000 of those in government. so, the difference, about 760,000 are apparently not full-time stable jobs, what's known as the real unemployment mark, the unemployed and those too discouraged to look for work remains unchanged at 14.7%. white house correspondent wendell goler begins our coverage of the report and the spin. >> two days after a disappointing debate with mitt romney, president obama looked on the bright side of a merely modest jobs report for september. >> this morning, we found out that th

when he gets on that debate stage in denver, is go off the president not just on what romney says are ineffectual policies like the president's healthcare law and stimulus packages, but the cost of those policies as compared to romney's own perscriptions that call for smaller less expensive government. for the president what he's going to try to do is say look, maybe things aren't so great but it is partly the fault of george w. bush and the republicans who were in office prior to the democrats taking control in 2009, so we need time to fix it, and by the way, the president will also say that he wants to increase taxes on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv screen across the screen there, as you can see. but haven't americans in some way become number to astronomical numbers? how serious is this in. >> they have become number. is it the new normal this massive spilling of red ink but it raises three problems which i do

sides are doing it and to not quite mediate in that way. both campaigns, the romney campaign is particularly in the last few days has said that during the debates they're going to fact check live which sometimes can mean just saying something isn't true when it is true or saying something is true when it isn't true. and i think that because the speed has really increased, there's a lot more for reporters to do. um, there's also the issue i mentioned about money and spending and keeping an eye on that. i think there's some great work that's being done in tracking spending and donors and figuring it out. but there's also a lot more money on the table because of citizens united. so that's a real challenge. and in some ways to bring the optimism and pessimism together about this, i think that this might be the election cycle where both sides -- it's become clear what the tools are for both sides. there's money, there's media access, there's social media, there's ways to quickly get information out and really ask questions. and the last few weeks before people actually vote, we're
